Louvered Basics

What's the difference between "louver" and "louvre"?

Just the geography! "Louver" is the standard American English spelling, while "louvre" is used in British English, being used in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia. Both words are pronounced the same and refer to the same angled slat design.

What are the benefits of a louvered fence over traditional fences?

Louvered provides enhanced privacy while still allowing light and air to flow through, making them ideal for creating a comfortable, well-ventilated outdoor space, unlike solid horizontal privacy fences that can feel too enclosed. Louvered fences also offer a modern, sleek appearance, enhancing the aesthetic of your property and providing a long-lasting investment.

What are louvered fence brackets, and why do I need them?

Fixed louvered fence brackets are specialized hardware components that hold horizontal or vertical slats at a fixed, precise angle. Traditionally, building a louvered structure required advanced carpentry skills and hours of tedious manual work. EZ Louver brackets eliminate that work, drastically reducing the time it takes to build your project. They ensure accuracy and consistent spacing, giving you a professional finish in a fraction of the time.

How long does it typically take to install a louvered fence?

About the same amount of time as any other fence. The installation time depends on factors like the size of your property, ground conditions, weather, availability of materials, accuracy, and planning.

For louvered fences, having the distance between posts be the same as the slat material you purchase saves time. So does having the posts be level.

If you hire a contractor, their specific fence company's schedule. Your installer can give you an accurate timeline based on your property's requirements.

Specifications

Do you have a technical spec sheet for architectural planning?

Yes, we have a pdf with the dimensions of the brackets.

How many EZ Louver brackets should I purchase for my fencing project?

Plan for one pair (two brackets) for every two feet of your project height.

  • Example: A 4-foot-tall privacy screen requires two pairs of brackets.
  • Need a custom height? Our standard 2-foot brackets are designed to stack vertically on top of one another, and can easily be trimmed down to fit custom dimensions.
How durable are EZ Louver brackets, and what material are they made of?

EZ Louver brackets are exceptionally durable and built to withstand the rigors of outdoor environments. Crafted from industrial-grade 5052 aluminum, the brackets are a robust and reliable foundation for your louvered fence. The use of aluminum ensures that EZ Louver brackets are not only sturdy but also highly resistant to rust and corrosion, making them a long-lasting and maintenance-free solution for enhancing privacy and security in your outdoor space.

Installation

Should I install this myself, or hire a professional?

This is a personal choice! DIYers have different levels of skill and expertise. Professionals are accustomed to setting posts and building projects every day. They have a full-time commitment to the job, and a local fence installer can get the job done quickly if you’re short on time.

To find an installer, reach out to us at EZ Louver and, where possible, we’ll connect you with one of our colleagues in the industry.

How easy is the installation process?

It’s incredibly straightforward and requires no advanced carpentry skills. Typical tools like a level, measuring tape, saw, and drill are required. The general process is:

  1. Fasten the brackets securely to your level posts.
  2. Attach a front fascia or cover board.
  3. Slide your chosen slats directly into place.
  4. Attach slats to the brackets.

What is the best type of screw to use for a louvered project?

You’ll need exterior grade, corrosion-resistant screws for two purposes:

  1. To attach the brackets to your posts.
  2. Slat screws to attach your slats to the bracket. For these, you need screws that aren’t too long (they’ll poke through the slat) or too short (they need to grip the slat well).
Do I need EZ Louver spacers, and how do they work?

If your sections are longer than 5-feet, or if your material needs additional support, consider using the spacers. They are installed between slats to provide additional structural support and prevent warping or twisting. Each set comes with spacers and the screws that are needed for installation. A short spacer installation video is available.

Can I use composite or other non-wood slats?

Yes, you can use composite, aluminum, or any other non-wood material for your louvered fence. The brackets are designed to accommodate various materials and sizes from ½” to 5/4” thick.

Can EZ Louver brackets be attached to metal posts?

Yes, both installers and DIYers have installed the brackets onto metal posts or existing gate frames. The brackets are aluminum so they work perfectly with aluminum framing using self-tapping screws.

Are the slats for the louvers included?

No, the louvers are not included with the brackets. You’ll need to purchase your slat material locally. The most common wood slat materials are:

  • 5/4" x 6" deck boards
  • 1" x 6" treated or cedar boards, or
  • ⅝" x 6" cedar or treated pickets
What is the maximum length of a louvered fence panel that can be created using EZ Louver brackets?

We recommend constructing louvered sections that are five feet or less in length using EZ Louver brackets.

For longer sections, we have designed spacers to provide additional structural strength and stability. Our spacer sets provide both the spacers and the screws needed to install them.
